Committee Descriptions

AR is a program for students in 2nd through 5th grades that helps manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. Children pick books at their reading level and read it at their own pace. When completed, the child takes a short quiz on the computer. Volunteers are needed to organize incentives and recognition awards.  Help us make reading fun!

Each classroom collects items for a themed basket.  Committee volunteers help collect items from each classroom, assemble baskets, sell raffle tickets the last week of November and the first week of December, including at the craft fair.

Volunteers are responsible for sanitizing keyboards, mice and headphones in the computer lab on a weekly basis. Help us keep the computer lab as germ free as possible!

Volunteers assist in collecting, cutting, counting and awarding prizes for Box Tops for Education collections in October and February.

CRAFT FAIR

The first Saturday in December is the annual West Teays Craft Fair.  This much-anticipated event regularly hosts more than 70 vendors.  Volunteers are needed to work the concession stand, set up spaces for vendors, and assist with registration and clean up at the end of the day.  The show occurs annually on 1st Saturday in December from 9:00am – 3:00pm.

Volunteers are needed to assist in inside and outside seasonal decorating.

HERITAGE DAY

Heritage Day is scheduled for October 22nd where we have had hay rides, and host local artisans who educate the students on candle making, blacksmith, Indian folklore and more.  Volunteers are needed to assist in setup for event, getting students on hayrides, and moving though the artisan booths on the field.

FAMILY FUN NIGHT

One of our most anticipated events of the year is scheduled for May 6th from 6-8pm.  All West Teays families are invited to attend a fun-filled evening with inflatables, rock walls, games, and sweet treats.  Volunteers are needed to solicit donations, set up for the event, and oversee games and inflatables for 30 minute shifts.

Volunteers are needed for upkeep of the mulched areas in front of the school and the butterfly garden and pond on the side of the school.

HOLIDAY PICTURES

Pixels to Portraits will be on-site during school hours and for after-hours appointments on November 13th to take Holiday pictures. Volunteers are needed to set up, collect the students from classrooms, escort them to photo area at their scheduled time, return them to class once photos are taken, collect money and forms, and clean up.

This is a great way to get involved with your child’s classroom and school.  Homeroom parents will work with the teacher in planning various classroom activities, soliciting volunteers for Field Day, organizing healthy snacks for WESTEST week and any additional needs of the classroom teacher.

Volunteers are needed to help in the High Tunnel to plant, weed, etc. and assist the students with their planting beds.

Volunteers are needed to help show our appreciation for school staff and teachers for all they do for our children.  Meals and snacks are provided at selected times of the year.  This committee is also responsible for activities during Staff Appreciation Week.

Volunteers are needed to recruit PTO members during the annual membership support drive.  Responsibilities include accumulating the membership list, tracking class participation and providing incentives for class participation.

Volunteers are needed to pop, serve, and sell popcorn once a week on Fridays.

READ ALOUD

Volunteers are needed to read aloud in the classroom for 15 to 20 minutes each week on a scheduled basis.  Individual commitment depends on the number of volunteers per class.

SANTA’S WORKSHOP

Santa’s Workshop allows students to select holiday gifts for family and friends. This is an exciting educational program as the students learn to shop, make decisions about money and recognize the value of a dollar.  Santa’s helpers are needed to set up the store and assist the children in their purchases.

SCIENCE PROGRAM

These hands on science experiments are designed to show students that Science is FUN!  Volunteers are provided experiments, explanations, and materials to demonstrate basic science principles.  We need several volunteers in each classroom to do this.  You do NOT need to be a scientist to volunteer.

SPIRIT WEEK

School spirit is soaring during Hurricane High School Homecoming.  Volunteers are needed to sell paper footballs and collect can goods for the food drive.

The yearbook committee needs volunteers for many duties: Assisting with picture day, taking candid photos, collecting photos of events, coordinating advertisements, managing sales and distribution of the yearbook.  Donations of photos are also needed and appreciated.
